FAQ

Is the Palo Santo tree endangered?

There are two species of trees known as Palo Santo. Bursera Graveolens, which grows in Central America and down through Peru, is the Palo Santo that we use, and is not endangered. Bulnesia Sarmientoi, which is used mainly as a timber export and grows in a different region of South America than Bursera Graveolens, is unfortunately endangered.

Is there a risk of deforestation or over-harvesting of the Palo Santo tree?

Trees need to age and fall down, and then sit on the forest floor for four to ten years to allow their aromatic resins to develop and cure. Clear-cutting Palo Santo would have no benefit. We source our wood from collectors who are actively planting more trees than they collect, to ensure the conservation and health of the forest. Sustainable gathering methods and reforestation efforts are proactively doing the work to maintain and preserve the longevity of Palo Santo.

Is Palo Santo or Clary Sage used for religious or spiritual practice?

Palo Santo, translated to “Holy Wood,” originates from Indigenous peoples in Central and South America. It is a sacred tree, with many spiritual, medicinal, and practical uses in its native communities. It’s known for its presence in traditions and ceremonies as a powerful way to cleanse, clear, and protect. It’s used medicinally to help treat headaches, soothe panic attacks, bolster immunity and relieve breathing issues. It’s even widely used as an especially effective mosquito repellant.

Clary Sage originates from the Mediterranean region. It is a different plant than White Sage, which is the variety many people think of. White Sage is used exclusively in spiritual practice and ceremonies. We respect White Sage’s important cultural role in ritual, and we do not use it in Pit Liquor.

Should Indigenous people and their descendants be the only people who use Palo Santo?

Because it is used by Indigenous communities for both sacred work and practical applications, Palo Santo can be appreciated by many people in many contexts. As with all things that come from other cultures, it’s important to treat Palo Santo with respect. Our Palo Santo is sourced from a community that benefits from the business of exporting, takes care of their forests, and is happy to see Palo Santo be enjoyed around the world.

Where do you get your Palo Santo?

Our exclusive supplier for Palo Santo is Sacred Wood Essences. They have a single-source supply, and they maintain a longstanding close relationship with their collectors in Sancán, a coastal town in Ecuador.

Is this safe to use during pregnancy?

We recommend talking to your midwife or OBGYN before use. Clary Sage is a uterine stimulant, however, there are varying views on whether the amount present in Pit Liquor would have any effect. Our formula is diluted to under .8% concentration of Clary Sage.
