Burning a candle seems like a rather simple process, purchase, light, and enjoy.

"Au contraire, mon frère"

Candles have memories, require timed burnings, and need some routine maintenance.

Candles have Memories?

A candle's memory refers to the principle that a candle's first burn sets its future burn pattern. This first burn causes it to "remember" the initial melt pool. If extinguished too soon (before the wax reaches the edge), it can lead to tunneling (a memory ring) where it only burns down the center, wasting wax. To prevent this "memory," the first burn should last long enough (often 2-4 hours, or 1 hour per inch of diameter) for the entire top layer of wax to melt to the container's edge, ensuring a full, even burn for the candle's life.

Burn Times

The literature around candles is to burn 1 hour per inch of candle diameter. In the case of our 3 inch candles that would result in a 3 hour continuous burn time. We have seen not to exceed 4 consecutive hours of continuous burning to reduce overheating, wear, and collection of soot.

Wick Maintenance

Trim the wick to 1/4 - 1/2 inch before each burn. We have selected a cotton wick, which after the initial burn should self modulate, but each wick burns a little differently. The wick we chose is designed to provide the benefits of a self-trimming wick posture with rigidity similar to that found in cored wicks. High-performance cotton fibers, along with other natural materials are engineered into a specially constructed braid, producing a more predictable wick posture.

Safety

1) Never leave a burning candle unattended or near drafts, pets, or children.

2) Keep the wax pool free of debris such as wick trimmings or matches.

3) Stop burning when ¼ inch of wax remains.

What else could be in your Pit Liquor candle?

That could be one of few things, pollen, propolis, or the herbs from the Pit Liquor deodorant we put into each candle.

Looking to make your pillar candle a container candle?

We have had success sliding these candles into pint and a half or 24oz wide mouth glass jars.

How long should my Pit Liquor Candle Last?

We have tested the candle recipe in containers, pillars, with multiple wicks quite a few times and we have seen burn times around 50 hours, but have had some tests last as long as 60 hours or as few as 40 hours depending on perfect wick placement.
